World Naked Gardening Day (Yep, You Read That Right)

Ever tempted to weed your garden in the buff? Knock yourself out on World Naked Gardening Day, the first Saturday in May.

We don’t know how the first five World Naked Gardening Days (WNGD) escaped our attention, but we won’t let the sixth annual event, May 5, go unnoticed.

Why garden naked? Certainly, not to improve curb appeal.

“It’s fun!” says the WNGD website (which we suggest you visit only if you are a fan/advocate of nudity). “Second only to swimming, gardening is at the top of the list of family-friendly activities people are most ready to consider doing nude.”

I’ve done a bit of skinny dipping in my day, but gardening in the altogether is just asking for trouble. Not necessarily from my neighbors, who are up for just about anything; but from the thorns on roses, hungry mosquitoes, and poison ivy creeping between English ivy.

To be fair, the event does have a higher mission: To help our culture move toward a healthy sense of body (yea!). Its site also states that naked gardening reminds us “that we can be honest with who we are as humans and as part of this planet.”

So, if you want to give naked gardening a try (please, do not send us pictures), here are a few precautions to take.

  • Slather on sunscreen to protect areas where the sun doesn’t often shine.
  • Don’t garden at dusk, when mosquitoes are looking for a meal.
  • Forgo pruning roses unless you wear elbow-high gloves.
  • Screen off the garden or patio with wood lattice panels for some added privacy.

Ever heard of World Naked Gardening Day before? What do you think of their mission?
